If only i had known sooner!

I clocked out for the last time from full time employment on February 13, 2026. It was 4:30 pm. I had said my good-byes at a lovely party the staff had given me. Kind words were spoken, snacks were consumed, hugs and handshakes were exchanged. It was surreal. Robynn and I walked out to the parking lot laden with leftover food and gifts giddy over the new level of time we would now share. We loaded up the car, started her up, rolled down the windows and played “Don’t Look Back” by Boston rather loudly as we exited the parking lot fast…like a couple of teenagers. We thrust our arms out the window and waved furiously at the facility as we sped off. It happened. I retired, but I didn’t feel old.

The subsequent weeks have been fun, busy, exciting and full of goals met. Our home and gardens are starting to wake up from the winter slumber. If only I had known sooner. It wouldn’t have mattered though. You can only leave employment when the system allows. We will still pay taxes. We will still pay for utilities and property tax. Insurance will still come due. Groceries will still be a thing. However, I am smiling and enjoying my new schedule. My kids have said I look peaceful and restful. I have dropped nearly 20 pounds of dead weight. The stress level has dropped now that I am not performing toward the next raise or staff cuts.

Perhaps I would have done things differently to prepare if I had realized how wonderful retirement would be. At the same time though, I wouldn’t change a thing for the tremendous experience and friendships I have made in my latter working years. I probably would have retired at the same time, but maybe with just a little more money in the bank. The early years of retirement can’t be replaced.

Robynn and I purchased a couple of e-bikes. We have been terrorizing the town. We need a massive group of seniors riding together ganged up with colors and patches on vests. Yes, we are free and WILD!

The only statement I would make is I’m thankful to be alive and healthy. God is good, God is great!

Be blessed this Easter season as you realize what the creator of the earth has done for you. We should all count our blessings and give thanks to Him who has provided!
